The core of itAsk people what they dread about dentistry and it is rarely pain itself, modern local anesthetic handles pain, it is the feeling of being trapped, reclined, unable to speak, while things happen at someone else's pace. So that is what we treat. Everything is explained before it happens. A raised hand stops us, instantly, every time, and we mean every time, because a stop signal honored once and ignored later is worse than none. You choose narration or silence. Breaks are yours. The pace is yours. Dentistry done this way is slower by minutes and better by miles.
If it has been yearsPeople who have avoided the dentist for five or ten years consistently overestimate what they will need. The first visit here is an exam and a plain-language conversation, nothing else, and the plan that comes out of it starts with what actually matters, usually less than feared, sequenced into visits sized to what you can face, each priced in writing before you commit. If active pain is what finally brought you in, the emergency page and the $99 exam are the fastest route to making it stop, and anxious emergency patients get the same control-based handling, just sooner. Nobody is talked past their limit here, and stopping for the day is always an option you can take. The new patients page covers the practical details of a first visit.
An exam and a conversation, nothing more, and no lecture at any point, because you already know how long it has been and repeating it helps nobody. We look, we explain what we find in plain language, and we agree what order to do things in, if anything even needs doing; many returning patients need far less than they feared. You stay dressed, informed and in charge throughout. Call (816) 439-7715.
Control, mostly. Before anything starts you hear what will happen and what you will feel; we agree a stop signal, usually a raised hand, that is honored instantly and every time; treatment is narrated at whatever level you want, full commentary or silence; and breaks are yours to take. Most dental fear is fear of being trapped in the chair, and an exit you can trigger at will dismantles it. Call (816) 439-7715.
Largely, yes. Numbing gel on the gum first takes the edge off, and the anesthetic given slowly, which we do as a rule, is dramatically more comfortable than the fast version most bad memories are made of. For most anxious patients the injection turns out to be the summit of the whole visit, and it is a smaller summit than remembered. After that, the rule is pressure and vibration, never pain. Call (816) 439-7715.
Morning, in our experience. An early slot means less time spent dreading it, no day of anticipation, and you walk out with the whole thing behind you by 9am. Tell the front desk you are an anxious patient when booking; it changes how we pace the appointment, and it is information we want, not an inconvenience. Bring headphones if music helps, and eat normally beforehand. Call (816) 439-7715.
Then we split it. Treatment plans can be sequenced into smaller visits, starting with whatever ends any active pain, and each step is priced and explained before you commit to the next, so there is never a point where things are happening to you on momentum. Nothing proceeds faster than you are ready for, and a plan that takes six visits instead of two is a perfectly good plan. Call (816) 439-7715.
